Don't feel bad, fellow Democrats. Here's what happened, and here's what's going to happen.

George W. Bush won.

Why? Because a slight majority of the people in America aren't progressive. They don't really want a change. They think that marriage should be between a man and a woman. They like an exclusive Upper Class and a Lower Class dynamic. They enjoy their State with a couple of spoonfuls of Church stirred in.
Maybe they're old, maybe they're rich, maybe they just like war... for whatever reason, they voted, and the good guys lost.

What happens now?

A theocracy. The Senate, House, and Presidential seat are all pretty much of the conservative mind. We can expect to see the word "God" showing up on more state flags, and in more courtrooms. Abortion will probably come very close to being illegal, and no research is going to fly unless it's okay with the church.

Our privacy will be lessened. Let the Patriot Act be sort of a guidestone to the Orwellian days to come. You better have an extra chair in your house, because the government will be sitting in there with you, just to make sure you're doing the right things.

Private schools will become more popular, public schools will get a lot worse. Remember when cable TV first came out, and the cable company said "No commercials! Whoopee, commercial-free forever! We don't need ads, because you're paying for this service!" Eventually, cable became just like regular TV, except you were paying for it. That's when regular TV started to suck.

The republicans don't believe in true education reform. They believe that the key to better education is to offer private school vouchers. Soon, (very soon) public school will suffer to the point where they are no longer a viable education source. It will still be offered for the lower class. There will be more Private Schools with a higher student population, and the quality will begin to suffer. Soon, Private School will be much like the Public School that we went to, except you'll be paying for it.

So what's the good news?

Those older, conservative voters are going to die.

They always do. Then they are replaced by moderate conservatives. This has been happening for years. Don't think our conservatives are moderate? I have news for you, if you look at a long enough timeline, Pat Buchanan is a moderate conservative.

It wasn't that long ago that people were burned for practicing witchcraft. Women weren't allowed to vote. Once upon a time, a black man couldn't meet the eyes of a white woman on the street without getting lynched. How do you think people at that time would have reacted to the idea that a black man would be mayor of a major city?

On a long enough time span, our society becomes more and more liberal. There are swings towards the conservative, like prohibition. This happens when people get scared for the future, and want to return to a simpler time. It never lasts though, and as our nation moves towards the inevitable future, the republicans kick and cry all the way. They're merely slowing down the natural progress of things, and they know it. The U.S. will become more and more focused on freedom, science, and an understanding of other nations. If we lose abortion, it will come back. Stem-cell research will happen and we will be cloning those organs we need in no time. We will move towards tolerance and a global mindset, it's just going to take a little longer.

So relax. It will be all right. Don't forget where we came from, and consider the trend. We will have a better future.

In fact, we're having one now.
